Self Care 101

Posted on 27 December 2018

There are some days when it feels like everyone wants a piece of you. We often get trapped in the habit of going to bed late, waking up early, and prioritizing everything and everyone but ourselves.

We allow ourselves to get into a cycle of stretching ourselves too thin and neglect our own needs in the service of others. But eventually something’s got to give, and without the proper self-care, we run the risk of becoming too sick or too tired to do anything for anyone.

Self-care is important because it requires you to spend time doing something that helps you release all of that pent-up stress and anxiety.

The more intentional you are about spending time loving and taking care of you, the more you’ll begin to notice changes in your ability to cope with the demands of everyday life!

Self-care Can Be Simple

While a day at the spa is definitely one way to unwind, practicing self-care doesn't need to be extravagant or expensive.

In fact, there are ways to incorporate self-care into your daily, weekly, and monthly routines. Besides, the last thing you need to stress about is finding ways to de-stress!

That’s why we’ve put together a list of our favorite tips to get you on the path to a healthier, happier lifestyle (without breaking the bank).

Take A Digital Detox

Let’s be real, we spend TONS of time on our smartphones, laptops, and desktops. While this can be fun in doses, too much screen time can actually be detrimental to your health.

So give yourself a digital detox. You can decide to make it a social media cleanse, or you can even pick a weekend and vow to leave your phone and your computer alone.

According to scientific research, this will help you hone your patience, focus, and ability to sense other people’s emotions. If it seems scary to say ‘no’ to all screens, start by just deleting your social apps from your phone for a 48-hour period.

Without a barrage of comments, likes, tweets, and DMs, you’ll give your mind a chance to truly relax and focus on the real-world things around you.

Declutter Your Space

A little clean goes a long way! You wouldn’t believe how much clutter can actually affect your overall sense of serenity.

If you clear your physical space, you’ll be surprised how easily your mental space will clear too. Not much of a clean freak? Start with making your bed. Studies have shown that even that small action like that can contribute to healthier sleep habits and better rest!

Deep Condition...Errrytthinng

There’s no reason you can’t treat yourself to your very own spa day at home. Most of the time we talk about the importance of deep conditioning your curls but why not try pampering yourself head to toe? Grab your favorite nail polish and give yourself a pedi. Do a deep, full-body exfoliation and then lather up with a thick body moisturizer (we love shea butter). If you’re feeling extra fancy, pick up a sheet mask at your local drug store and draw a bath. Anything goes. This is your time to take care of you!

Get Outside

We tend to bundle up during the winter to avoid chilly temps but spending some time outside can do wonders for your mood. Not to mention, a healthy dose of Vitamin D will leave you feeling invigorated.

If you’re adventurous, try a winter sport like skiing or outdoor ice-skating. If that’s not your style, go for a brisk walk. You don’t have to go very far, you can do something as simple as checking out your local park and people-watching. If it’s extra chilly, take along a warm treat, like a thermos of hot cocoa.

Self-care Is All About You

These tips are just scratching the surface. There are soooo many ways to practice self-care; all that matters is doing something that leaves you feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

I go for Aquafit 3 times a week & gym/power walk 2 times a week. My goal for 2019 is to lock up the hot tools (flat iron) & only shampoo my hair 1/week. I’m looking forward to trying the mini LUS gift pack & hope to welcome & keep the curls back in my life.
